Courses
Learning paths are collections of training modules that are organized around specific roles (like developer, architect, or system admin) or technologies (like Azure Web Apps, Power BI, or Xamarin.Forms). When you finish a learning path, you’ve gained a new understanding of different aspects of the technology or role you’re studying. You also get an achievement trophy!

Earning a Microsoft Certification is globally recognized evidence of real world skills. A Microsoft Certification showcases your commitment to keeping pace with rapidly changing technology and positions you for increased skills, efficiency, and earning potential in your professional roles.
- Thirty-five percent of technical professionals say getting certified led to increased income and twenty-six percent reported promotions1. IT professionals who achieve a relevant, role-based technical certification perform an average of twenty-six percent better than their uncertified colleagues.
- Team leaders who support and encourage their teams to get certified can expect a higher performing workforce. Workers are more likely to stay with a company that invests in their skills through certifications.
- Getting a Microsoft Certification is also a great way to break into the tech industry. A Microsoft Certification conveys expertise, especially helpful for someone new to the industry.
No. Certification renewal is free to anyone with a valid Microsoft associate, specialty, and expert certification.
Microsoft associate, specialty, and expert certifications that have been available for more than six months have a renewal option. For details, visit our certification renewal blog.
As with any marketplace, the price of the class is determined by each Learning Partner. Partners are required to provide a full Microsoft Official Course training experience for the price that is listed on the Microsoft Learn scheduling tool. Partners are permitted to advertise additional products and services that are optional. If you feel that advertised pricing is misleading.
Exams
Online proctored exams are a convenient way to earn certifications from your home or office rather than a test center. You’ll save travel time and the stress of finding the test center on exam day. Microsoft partners with Pearson VUE to deliver certification exams through online proctoring.
Exam duration
The number of questions on a certification exam is subject to change as we make updates to ensure it aligns with current changes in the technology and job role. Most Microsoft Certification exams typically contain between 40-60 questions; however, the number can vary depending on the exam.
Exam time varies based on the type of exam you take.
*Exam duration refers to the amount of time that you have to complete the exam. Seat time refers to the amount of time that you should allocate for the exam. It includes the time needed to review the instructions, read and accept the Microsoft Certification Exam Candidate Agreement, complete the exam questions, and provide comments after completing it (if you choose to do so).
Review the study guides for technical exams
Study guides are available for each role-based, specialty, and fundamentals exam. They will help you understand what to expect on the exam and include a summary of the topics the exam covers, with links to additional resources. They also include study resources where you can find self-study options and classroom training, as well as links to documentation, community sites, and exam prep videos. The information and materials in the study guides will help you focus your studies as you prepare for the exam.
Watch exam prep videos
Exam prep videos are available for some Microsoft Certification exams and are listed on the exam details page and in the exam readiness zone. They provide tips, tricks, and strategies for preparing for an exam by describing key skills measured on the exam and how to allocate your study time. Each video segment corresponds to a major topic area on the exam. These on-demand videos, led by Microsoft Certified Trainers (MCTs), will highlight objectives that many test takers find difficult and include example questions and answers with explanations. You can browse all available videos in the exam readiness zone.
Self-paced training on Microsoft Learn
A list of free online learning paths is available on each certification and exam details page to help you prepare. You can also browse all learning paths and modules based on product (for example, Azure, Microsoft 365, Windows), based on role (such as developer or data engineer), or based on learning level (beginner, intermediate, and advanced).
Microsoft Learn online modules and tutorials are bite-sized, interactive skill builders you complete at your own pace and are available in multiple languages.

This type of question asks you to perform tasks in a virtual environment. You will see a screen that includes a virtual machine window and a Tasks pane. The virtual machine window is a remotely connected live environment where you perform tasks on real software and applications.
The Tasks pane lists the tasks you need to perform in the lab. You can expand or collapse each task with the + or – symbols. For your convenience, each task has a checkbox so you can mark tasks as you complete them. Doing this won’t affect anything in the lab or scoring. Nothing in the lab will indicate if you did not complete a required task, so you may want to keep track of the tasks that you have completed by checking the boxes.
After you leave a lab, you will not be able to return to it because scoring starts (in the background) as soon as you leave a lab. When you click Next, you will be asked to confirm that you really want to leave the lab. Clicking Yes will end the lab section, and the tasks will be scored.
Performance based testing gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your skills by completing tasks in the technology. Today, this means completing tasks in a graded lab, but in the future, PBT may take a different form. For example, for those of you who are currently performing the job role, Microsoft is exploring ways to incorporate the work that you do every day into our certification requirements. For those of you who are not in the job role yet, we’ll continue to have other ways for you to demonstrate your skills through portfolios and graded labs. Microsoft is constantly innovating to ensure that we assess your skills and abilities in ways that align to how you actually get your work done. To view the PBT tutorial video, click here.
Virtual Classroom
Our virtual classroom courses allow you to access award-winning classroom training, without leaving your home or office. Our learning professionals are specially trained on how to interact with remote attendees and our remote labs ensure all participants can take part in hands-on exercises wherever they are.
Our most effective way to learn. Blended Learning combines the best of our online learning platform and live instructor-led learning from industry experts, giving your teams the tools to apply learning with impact, and allowing you to track and manage your learning investment.
Let’s start with a definition of “online training” to ensure that we are both saying the same thing. Online training is any form of instruction that takes place completely on the internet. It can be text-based and have graphics, video, audio, animations, simulations, and other interactive elements as complex as augmented or virtual reality components. It is usually delivered through a learning management system (LMS) or microlearning platform.
Online training can be so much more than just electronically delivered courses, so don’t worry that your team is going to suffer “death by PowerPoint™,” as a friend of mine referred to her corporate training as she slogged through endless online presentations and YouTube™ videos. Properly done, online training should present your learners with opportunities to interact with their course material and demonstrate that they are learning and retaining the content. Flashcard drills, game-based learning activities, quizzes, and tests can be part of the mix. Some online training programs also have social learning components – everything from Zoom-call office hours with the instructor to synchronous or asynchronous communication through chat, email, or professional social platforms like Slack™ or Microsoft Teams™.

Online training has been known by many names over the years. You may encounter some of the following:
- Computer-based training (CBT)
- Distance learning
- eLearning (sometimes spelled e-learning)
- Web-based learning or web-based training
Online training removes your reliance on the availability of a qualified instructor to deliver a real-time course, to a sufficient number of learners, in an accessible location in order to upgrade or add new skills to your team. Once a course is built and deployed, learners can access the course as assigned, wherever they are, without having to rely on the physical presence of an instructor, or as part of a cohort of fellow employees who need that same training. Gone are the days of waiting for the trainer to visit your region or having a sufficient number of people who needed to learn “X” in order to justify the training expense of bringing everyone together. Build a course, launch a course, and your learners can take a course.
Learning without fear, but as fast as you can
Most online training is delivered asynchronously, meaning that each learner accesses their courses according to their own schedule and progresses through the courses at their own pace. Your trainees will be learning as fast as they can without slowing down a classroom of more experienced team members or feeling foolish, overwhelmed, or frustrated in front of their instructor or peers. This is a huge boost to learner confidence and competence. An environment that is resource-rich and supportive inspires confidence rather than a fear of judgment for not knowing. And of course, they don’t know – that’s why they are being trained! Now your learners can feel better about their training experience and happier overall with their work environment.
To deliver online training, you need three things, at the very minimum. You need to know what your desired training outcomes are, essentially, what KPIs you want to change as a result of your training program. You need to have course content able to be delivered in a measurable and engaging way to your learners. Finally, you need to have an online platform to deliver that training and measure your learner’s performance. Let’s dig into each of those.

Your training outcomes
Of course, you want your employees to know what they need to know to do their jobs properly and safely – that’s a given for any responsible employer. Effective training is more than just measuring “butts in seats” or courses completed – to be worth the investment, learners need to change their behavior to improve performance and deliver more benefit to their employer.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are the metrics that measure the outcomes of improved performance. What is the change you want to see? Here are some examples:
- Reduced employee turnover/higher job satisfaction
- Reduced health and safety incidents or violations
- Improved productivity/rate of work (more widgets made)
- Measurable compliance to industry regulations, especially if you’re in an industry that is monitored by a third party or government agency
- Increased sales
- Higher customer retention
- Increased ability to promote from within (reducing new hire costs)
- And there are more, depending on the industry you may be in.
Online training gives you the ability to measure improvement over time, relying on hard numbers to demonstrate training ROI. A 30% decrease in worker injuries is worth so much more than a handful of smile sheets and a spreadsheet full of “butt in seat” attendance numbers.
